Driving Range Project Week 1

On Monday March 2nd, we shut down the driving range to implement the renovation of the driving range tee surface. This project will take 3 weeks from start to finish for the construction phase. Week 1 went well with the following accomplished.

– Removed existing sod and two additional inches of highly organic soil.

– After removal of the above items, regraded surface to desired subgrade.

– Installed new irrigation.

– Graded area for synthetic tee pad concrete base and installed gravel base for pad.

Following are a few pictures of the work in progress.

Removal of existing sod.
Removal of 2 additional inches.
Laser leveling subgrade to desired grade.
Install new irrigation in subgrade.
Work on pad for synthetic surface.

Along with the work being done by DHR Construction, we took advantage of the range being closed and performed the following work in-house:

– Removed sod from around chipping green bunker, regraded the edge and sodded.

Before.
20 inch sand build up practice bunker edge.
Over the years, sand builds up the from practice and raises the edge. The last time this was lowered was 2010. As you can see from the pictures it was 20 inches higher than the original grade.
Removal of the buildup on the practice green bunker.
Back to original grade!

Along with the bunker, we aerated the entire landing area, filled in some low areas and will seed into the area this coming Monday.

Another item we addressed was the growth along the fence line along Arnold Drive which was affecting irrigation coverage. There was actually an irrigation head underneath all this Blackberry.

Next week the following will be performed:

– Install new drainage in subgrade.

– Add 2 inches of new soil, till in 4 inches deep and laser level to final grade.

– Pour concrete pad for synthetic surface.

Next week, I will discuss what was accomplished in Week 2 and what will happen during Week 3. Along with that, we will communicate the grow in process of the new tee. We will open the back of the range Tuesday with limited space (6 stalls) to be used for warm up only. Since work will be going on at the main driving range tee, we ask that you use only irons for the workers safety. We look forward to providing the membership with a new and improved driving range tee.

Yours in turf,

Stacy L. Wallace, Golf Course Superintendent
