As 2022 arrives, we have seen some significant rainfall as compared to the last two rain seasons. Following is what we have received to date:
October: 13.21″
November: 2.63″
December: 10.11″
January: .5″ to date.
With that being said, we want to remind everyone the need to have carts on paths during certain periods this time of year. Soil Science 101 tells us soils are the most susceptible to compaction during wet periods. Compacted soils do not allow the proper air and water movement through the profile to allow viable growth. Due to the high amount of traffic on golf course playing surfaces (especially golf carts), compaction can become a serious issue inhibiting the ability to provide quality playing conditions. Along with compaction, the turfgrass is not able to recover as quickly like during the summer months due to shorter days and cooler (soil temperatures) weather. It is essential we control the use of golf cars on the playing surfaces during the winter months. We are still seeing some damage from people not following the “Cart Path Only” policy, as you can see in the photos below.

Please help us out and refrain from getting off the paths during these times. If you meet up with maintenance staff, we have trained them to move over for you, so keep it on the path at all times. The edges where the unsightly railroad tie curbs use to be are getting damaged also during these wet periods. Please keep all four tires on the path. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated as we get through these wet periods in Northern California.
Your’s in turf,
Stacy L. Wallace, Golf Course Superintendent
