September 5th, 2024 Update

As I indicated in the September newsletter, we will start the fall aeration and seeding programs after the weather pattern breaks this week to recover from the summer stress. We are currently seeing high 90’s to 100 degrees the first week of September. We will start tomorrow with a more aggressive interseeding on the Practice Green and #4 green. Because of this procedure, we will start all play on the back nine to allow us to complete the work during the cooler hours of the morning. It looks like the high temperature weather pattern is breaking this weekend, so you will start to see recovery work starting Tuesday.

In this picture you see the seed bed prep for the green seeding to be performed on the Practice Green and #4. After the seed is applied, a heavy topdressing will be implemented to fill in the holes to protect the seed.

Along with the aeration, we have procured some sod to facilitate quicker recovery on some of the new sod areas from the bunker renovation that have struggled from construction compaction, summer heat, and sod quality. Our native soils are heavy clay with minimal organics and numerous stones as you can see in the pictures below.

If you have not been reading our blogs, I would recommend going back and read the last six starting in July. We are currently updating the blog weekly to communicate summer stress recovery procedures.

Yours in turf,

Stacy L. Wallace, Golf Course Superintendent

    Hi Stacy,

Your crew has been doing a good job of keeping the fairways and rough green during our extreme weather.

I do want to express my frustration with the lack of care some players are exhibiting. Huge divots, sometimes just inches away not replaced or sanded. Large ball marks on the green go unrepaired and you know golfers walk right past without fixing their damage. People need to have respect for the course and other players by cleaning up after themselves and helping to keep our course the nicest in the Valley.
    Thanks, Jill Gumina
