Today is our 3rd week post green aeration. Typically, we see optimal growth by this time, but it has been a little slower. One of the critical biological aspects of plant growth is photosynthesis. This process converts light energy into chemical energy. Without the light part plant growth is limited. The first two weeks after aeration provided limited light so, we have had slower growth for recovery. Fortunately, we are seeing better weather so the plant should start recovering faster.
Today we vertically mowed the greens which brings up some sand and lightly topdressed to help smooth out the surfaces. Tomorrow, we will spray first thing in the morning. This will provide some essential nutrients that will help with recovery.
Another item we have heard some discussion is about the days we do not change the pin positions. During spring and fall aeration, we do not always change cups. This allows us to use that labor elsewhere for important maintenance practices. We base this decision on the number of rounds played on a given day. We also consider the forecasted rounds for the next day. Another period this will take place is in the winter months. Growth is slower during the shorter days of the year, so cup placement recovery is slower. This is a result of the photosynthesis process and daylight discussed above. Hopefully this enlightens you to some of the elements Mother Nature provides that we deal with on a daily basis.
